Ex-Woolworths executive Greg Foran to head WalMart US

Woolworths’ former head of supermarkets, Greg Foran, who quit in 2011 after missing out on the top job, has been appointed president and chief executive of WalMart’s US operations.

Mr Foran will succeed Bill Simons, who is stepping down in the wake of poor same-store sales results and supply problems at the world’s largest retailer.

Mr Foran, father of NRL star Kieran Foran, was expected to take the helm of Woolworths when Michael Luscombe retired in 2011, but was overlooked in favour of Grant O’Brien.

He left several months later to join WalMart as head of its China operations and had been running WalMart’s entire Asian operations since June.

nReuters reported Foran will earn a pay packet of US$950,000 ($1.01 million) and is in line for stock options worth up to US$4.9m next year.

Mr O’Brien congratulated Mr Foran on his appointment.
