Dick Smith’s bizarre retail practices

Just why would Dick Smith have acquired something from a supplier at 98¢ and sell the same thing back to the supplier at 78¢, then buy it back again at 78¢ or even 77¢?
And why would a note recording this in a Dick Smith document go on to suggest that such a manoeuvre would generate cash and make a profit for the retailer?
