Are upmarket food chains in Australia cursed? 
One of the pioneers in gourmet food retailing, Jones the Grocer, has just gone bust for the second time in 18 months in Australia even though its 17 overseas outlets in the Middle East and Asia are performing solidly.
The end of Jones the Grocer in Australia comes after 20 years of trading. It first set up an outlet in the affluent Sydney suburb of Woollahra in 1996 and was ahead of the game, with big rivals including David Jones and Coles soon following into the upmarket food segment with disastrous results.
