Coles baked bread: supermarket’s response to court

What do you think of when you see the word "baked" displayed near loaves of bread in a supermarket?

Coles Supermarkets say you may think of fresh bread made entirely from scratch and baked in an in-store oven, or products which have been frozen at some point during manufacture before being cooked, or loaves which are "par-baked" – partially baked, frozen and transported to a Coles store to be put in an oven.

The supermarket giant has filed its response in the Federal Court to allegations made by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission that it promoted the sale of bakery products in a way that may "mislead or deceive" the public, saying the meaning of "baked" is likely to be an issue in the case.
