Metcash ruling undermines retail competition, says ACCC

SUPERMARKET shelf prices could rise if a Federal Court judge’s decision to allow grocery wholesaler Metcash to buy Franklins and become a monopoly supplier to independent supermarkets is not overturned.

On the opening day of an appeal to the judgment allowing Metcash to proceed, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission argued the court had failed to identify a competitive market in the supermarket wholesale industry.
