Stores face crackdown over sale of cheap liquor

THE main supermarket chains have been warned that selling alcohol too cheaply may affect their chances of getting new bottle-shop licences approved, in a crackdown by NSW authorities.

The Casino, Liquor and Gaming Control Authority has written to Woolworths, Coles and Aldi asking for more information about alcohol pricing before it determines their applications for 17 new bottle-shop licences.

It has also asked the supermarkets to comment on the weighting it should give to alcohol pricing when assessing new bottle-shop licence applications.
