Woolworths increased first quarter sales by 4.9 per cent as Australia’s biggest supermarket chain increased market share and customer numbers.

Sales increased to $14.597 billion for the 14 weeks to October 2, compared with $13.91 billion a year earlier, Sydney-based Woolworths said in a statement on Thursday.

But the company’s general merchandise division, which includes discretionary retailers, reported a 1.6 per cent sales decline to $1.522 billion.
