Treasury Wine boss lashes retailers
Treasury Wine Estates chief executive Mike Clarke has lashed disgruntled independent retailers upset about recent deals the nation’s biggest winemaker has cut with Woolworths.
In a stern defence of the winemaker’s strategy, Mr Clarke said the company was offering fair terms to all of its retail customers and, in a sign his turnaround plan was beginning to gain traction, trading so far this financial year had been strong.
Some independent retailers are furious with Treasury for allowing Woolworths – the nation’s biggest liquor retailer – to participate in a wine fridge promotion in July, which they blame for stealing customers. They are also angry at a recent decision by Treasury, which makes Penfolds, Wolf Blass and Rosemount, to craft an exclusive label for Woolworths under its popular Pepperjack brand.
