January is always a predictable month, bringing with it the clearance sales, gloomy post-mortems of the festive season and dozens of cricket matches whose results will long be forgotten as early as April.
Also this month comes Deloitte’s annual Global Powers of Retailing report, a ranking of the world’s leading 250 retailers by sales. This year’s was the 16th such report and its subtext was a compelling restatement of what has become a leading theme of the global retail industry: that growth in the modern era is crucially dependent on overseas expansion, particularly into emerging markets.
